Strategy #6 for Drama-Free Living: Keep the pain in perspective. (because it serves a purpose)

No human can walk through life unscathed. There is physical and emotional pain for us all. Although pain is never comfortable, the vulnerability that emerges from that pain serves at least one purpose: to bring us together.

Pain is what all humans have in common. Those of us who have healed from the deepest of pains emerge to find we have a new super power. We are able to empathize with other’s misery, weaknesses, griefs, resentments and shortcomings because we understand the pain that sparks these emotions and behaviors. We are also able to give hope to those who are still suffering from similar pain.

So while we may avoid pain and vulnerability at every turn, it is pain and the resulting vulnerability that makes us better friends, spouses, coworkers, and neighbors. By allowing ourselves to become vulnerable enough to empathize, we are able to give and receive love and joy and hope and connection.

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of every positive emotion.” – BrenĂ© Brown
